The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation’s 2015 Art Museum Staff Demographic Survey was a response to the absence of reliable data about the demographic makeup of art museums across the country. The survey, undertaken with the support of the Association of Art Museum Directors and AAM, reflected the problem of demographic homogeneity throughout the museum community. The results also point to pathways for diversifying museum staff. The panel will continue the “pathway” discussion and explore the more active role and steps museum leaders can take in developing strategies to increase and sustain a workforce that reflects the diverse communities that a museum serves, or wants to serve, and creating a culture where diversity is valued.
