Traditionally in museums, the rule is, “Don’t touch!” But more and more museums are discovering that multi-sensory engagement, including inviting visitors to touch collection objects or other materials, can enrich the experience of all audiences. Through conversation and interaction, we’ll discover how learning through touch differs from and augments other senses. Speakers will discuss both the science and theory around the experience of touching, as well as concrete ways that opportunities to touch can be particularly important for people with disabilities. Finally, we will think together about ways that real museums can incorporate tactile experiences into their exhibitions and programs, to the benefit of all their visitors.
