The organizational culture of museums is a remnant of older times when museums were institutions for the elite and powerful members of society. Museums must build relationships based on mutual power and influence with diverse communities in order to remain relevant institutions. In this session, you will learn about a multi-layered data gathering process to create measurable benchmarks for Diveristy and Inclusion efforts. This case study combines focus groups, individual and group assessment of intercultural competence and quantitative methods to measure the level of inclusion in an organization’s culture. Based on this data, the Minnesota Historical Society has developed an action plan to take responsibility to develop inclusive museum practices.
