This past year, AAM established a new listserv for its members, Museum Junction, which joins established listservs MuseumEd and Museum-L (among others) as avenues for museum professionals to interact, learn from one another, and discuss issues in the field. Each of these listservs could be considered a community of practice (CoP) – a group of people who share a concern or a passion for something they do, and learn how to do it better as they interact regularly – or a professional learning community. This session will explore both on-line and face-to-face CoPs, the factors that make them successful; special projects made possible through CoPs; starting or participating in one; and how they serve as a promising alternative professional development strategy.
