Museums are increasingly offering their facilities as safe spaces for difficult conversations about potentially controversial topics. Several efforts to study and share the most effective methods for hosting such dialogue are underway. In keeping with this year’s theme, this session will explore the responsibility of museums as they cede the floor, and with it, the power, to their communities. This session will bring together institutions that have been at the forefront of this effort to tell tales of triumph and stumbles. Session presenters will use a story-telling format to describe the impact of dialogue programs on the culture of their own institutions and the challenges faced by museum staff who do this work.
