Tucked away in the collections of the Indian Arts Research Center (IARC) is an assembly of unusual Zuni pottery referred to as the Pseudo-Ceremonial Collection. Through collaboration with the Zuni, the history and cultural context of this collection was revealed. Although the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA) has begun to change the way museums approach culturally sensitive objects, it neither covers everything nor provides guidelines for non-sensitive items. This session focuses on the IARC’s approach to working with source communities to decolonize the museum, with particular emphasis on the collaborative nature of these initiatives, policies and procedures. You will be invited to share similar stories about how working with source communities benefited your museum.
