Exhibitions remain one of a museum’s most powerful and influential communication strategies, but too often the result of significant time and money is a good, but not great, exhibition. Privately, team members talk about the power struggles, lack of communication, and missed opportunities. The desire for more participatory exhibitions, visitor-generated content, rapid prototyping and innovation seem to be at odds with trends toward reducing or eliminating in-house design capabilities, teaching a one-size-fits-all design approach and reliance on design firms to lead the design process. Presenters in this session will use theatrical storytelling techniques to present vignettes that illustrate some of the challenges and opportunities of the exhibition design process today. You will have an opportunity to do your own role playing and engage in conversation that builds mutual respect and understanding among design professionals.
