Words matter. In exhibitions, they can be effective communicators. When well written and well designed, they can affect visitors’ experiences in powerful ways, enhancing understanding, meaning, and reflection. Moreover, choosing the right words is important; they reflect—and affect—values and attitudes. In this session, you will hear authors from the spring 2016 issue of Exhibitionist: “The Power of Words: Written, Spoken, and Designed.” After these experts briefly share their work, we’ll open up the session for a dialogue about words: best practices for writing labels in an increasingly digital age, how to edit your own writing, and how language can be used to shape exhibit design, improve the visitor experience, and foster inclusion.
