Held in trust by the US Department of the Interior (DOI) for the public and, in many cases, managed through partnerships with 837 non-Federal museums, an estimated 194 million objects and archives are available for research, exhibit, and education nation-wide. Statutory and regulatory requirements mandate that DOI maintain accountability for its collections housed in non-Federal museums, many of which are AAM members. DOI has entered into a variety of agreements with repositories to uphold these requirements. In this session, you will hear from representatives from DOI bureaus and the repositories housing DOI collections as they explore these collaborations and see what is and isn’t working to improve DOI’s partnerships with museums.
