In this session, you will learn about the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum’s GOALS for Girls program, which for nine years has attempted to directly address these challenges by engaging urban, teenage girls with science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) content in an extended, intensive program. Museums can act as forces of change by intentionally developing opportunities that stretch the aspirations of the members of their communities. According to a 2011 U.S. Department of Commerce report, “Women in STEM: A Gender Gap to Innovation”, women are underrepresented nationally both in jobs and degrees in STEM. The report concludes that key factors may be stereotypes that encourage mainly men to pursue STEM careers and a lack of female role models, particularly women of color, in STEM fields.
