Stricter rules and evolving attitudes are challenging museums that have ivory in their collections. Can those institutions continue to accession ivory? Can the ivory be loaned or used in traveling exhibits? Are resources available to determine if an object truly includes ivory? How can we provide interpretive context to the poaching crisis? In this session, you will gain an understanding of current rules and guidelines regarding ivory collections and consider how to engage in dialogue around this singular material. You will learn the conservation issues behind the regulations, and hear a case study of an institution that was affected by the rule changes. Questions and discussion will be an integral component of this session.
