How do community museums participate in the conversation around gentrification? Externally, museums and other cultural institutions are considering ways to ensure that people of all economic backgrounds have access to programs, as well as how – and whether – gentrification should be reflected in their programs and exhibits. Internally, museums face questions about building and retaining a diverse staff, some of whom cannot afford housing near the institution. All of these questions play out against a background where cultural institutions are frequently credited with a role in spurring economic development and attracting more affluent residents. Our panel will discuss specific ways they are addressing these critical issues.
