In 2014, public participation in Scotland reached a peak with 93 percent engagement in the Independence Referendum. The Scottish Government has participation as a top priority. This session will explore how museums are rising to this challenge, building on a tradition of public engagement with 56 percent of the core museum workforce comprised of volunteers and with two thirds of museums in Scotland being community-led and community-run organisations. In this session, you will look closely at the traditional notion of community involvement and explore how inclusive this is in reality. You will hear from participants from the National Development Body in Scotland, the Scottish Football museum and a trainee from a ground breaking non-graduate vocational training programme for museums.
