The session presents a case study of the Albright-Knox (AK) Art Gallery’s Innovation Lab, an in-house ‘think tank’ and R&D department for innovative AK initiatives. A team of AK staff members identifies issues in our community or in the museums sector around which the AK might initiate and facilitate a positive contribution. The Innovation Lab then seeks community partners whose areas of expertise can be catalyzed for the collaborative project. These partnerships provide creative energy, novel ways of thinking, and expertise in execution that expand the AK’s impact and social engagement. The Innovation Lab enables the museum to redefine its role in the broader community and to rethink what museums in the twenty-first century can be.
